WINS Natural Flood Management: Demand for Natural Flood Management
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies catchments that contribute runoff to urban areas at elevated risk of fluvial flooding and therefore represent priority areas for natural flood management (NFM) interventions. These catchments are considered demand areas where measures to slow, store or intercept water upstream may help reduce flood risk downstream.

The dataset was derived from the F_MAX scores within the Community Risk Register. Areas with an F_MAX score greater than 84, representing the median score across Wales, were identified as demand areas for natural flood management (NFM). Upslope areas contributing runoff to these demand areas were then delineated by identifying all Water Framework Directive (WFD) river catchments that drain into them. These contributing catchments were designated as the overall demand areas for catchment-scale NFM interventions.
