WINS Urban Green Infrastructure: Demand for Urban Greenspace - Noise Pollution
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies areas with a demand for greenspace based on exposure to noise pollution. Noise pollution is represented using decibel sound level contours. Demand is mapped along a colour gradient from dark blue to dark brown, with increasing demand determined by a combination of three factors: the intensity of noise pollution, population density, and levels of deprivation.

The dataset was created using monitoring data reporting road traffic and industrial noise within 5 dB A-weighted contour bands. For each dataset, areas within the ≥75 dB noise class were classified as having the highest demand for greenspace to provide relief from noise pollution, while areas within the 70 to 74.9 dB class were classified as having some demand.
The two noise datasets were then combined. Areas classified as having high demand in either dataset were assigned an overall high demand rating, while areas not classified as high demand but identified as having some demand in at least one dataset were assigned an overall moderate demand rating. Remaining areas were considered to have no demand for noise mitigation measures.
This demand layer was combined with population density and Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) data to derive an overall demand score for noise pollution mitigation measures. For the WIMD, the two most deprived categories (ranks 1 to 382) were assigned the highest priority, while ranks 383 to 573 were assigned a moderate priority. Areas with lower levels of deprivation were not assigned additional priority based on deprivation.
Population density, derived from the most recent census data, was classified into five groups using Jenks natural breaks. The two most densely populated classes were assigned the highest priority, the middle class was assigned a moderate priority, and the remaining classes were not assigned additional priority based on population density.
