WINS Urban Green Infrastructure: Demand for Urban Greenspace - Urban Accessible Greenspace
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows the catchment areas for accessible greenspaces, highlighting greenspaces that are likely to have a more ‘natural’ feel. It also shows urban areas that do not currently have access to greenspace (demand), and these have been prioritised according to the number of people and the overall deprivation in the area.

How the map has been created: All greenspaces were identified using MasterMap and OS Open Greenspace data. Phase 1 data was also used to identify beaches within MasterMap. Only polygons larger than 0.5ha were considered. For beaches, only polygons that intersected the Bathing Waters at Designated Beaches dataset were used, in order to identify beaches that are truly accessible. Proxy access points to the greenspaces were then defined by intersecting the greenspaces with the ITN and PROW network. For beaches, the beach polygons were first buffered by 20m to identify potential access points. For each access point, a route network was calculated along available routes up to a distance of 400m using the ITN and PROW network, establishing the actual routes people could use to access the greenspace. Catchment areas were then produced based on creation of concave hulls, establishing the total area reachable within a 400m travel distance from the greenspace. SINC data collected by NRW from local authorities and the Green Flag Park dataset were used to identify catchments belonging to greenspaces that are likely to be in particularly good/natural condition. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.
