WINS Woodland Planting: Opportunities for Woodland Planting for Carbon Sequestration
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (Previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows areas where woodland could be planted and deliver carbon sequestration benefits.

How the map has been created: To create this map, biophysical suitability for woodland planting was identified using ALC attribute data. As carbon sequestration will be more rapid if trees grow faster, areas where the biophysical conditions are good enough to facilitate fast growth of trees were prioritised. Within this opportunity space, sensitivities such as acid sensitive catchments were identified. Constraints, e.g. areas where the planting of woodland is not suitable due to existing land use and legislation, were then applied to define the final opportunity space. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider ffridd areas as a sensitivity or constraint.
