WINS Water Quality: Constraints for Reducing Faecal Coliform Pollution
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows constraints to intervention types for faecal coliforms entering the water environment. The number of constraints is combined across all land management intervention types, so an areas with one constraint for one type of action, and two constraints for another type of action will show as having three constraints.

How the map has been created: To create the constraints heatmap for faecal coliform management, the number of different constraints coinciding in any one area has been summed for each land management intervention type. The individual constraints considered were: hedges/fencing, drainage channel shelter belts and riparian woodland planting.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider groundwater The model does not consider urban areas of sewerage infrastructure as source of faecal coliforms. The model looks at intercepting the transport of faecal coliforms into waterbodies, but does not consider opportunities to reduce input of faecal coliforms at point source.
