WINS Water Quality: Opportunities for Reducing Sedimentation
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature Bases Solution or WINS project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities to carry out land management interventions to increase ecosystem service delivery in a number of key policy areas. What the map shows: The map shows areas where management action could be taken to reduce sedimentation in coastal and transitional waterbodies, as well as lakes and rivers. Management opportunities considered for reduction of sedimentation are habitat restoration or conversion in areas at high erosion risk; riparian buffer strips; hedgerow planting; cover crops or grass on tillage land

How the map has been created: The map has been created by identifying the overall opportunity space for each management option under consideration, and then combining them into a single layer summarising the opportunities to reduce sedimentation. After combining the opportunity spaces for the individual opportunity types, prioritisation was applied based on areas of demand. The individual opportunity layers were created by: Identifying areas with high erosion risk where habitat conversion or restoration could reduce the erodibility of the land; Identifying areas that are biophysically suitable for tree planting, not affected by any constraints, located within 50m of rivers and in an area of high erosion risk; identifying arable land at high erosion risk that does not already have hedges planted along field boundaries.; Identifying all arable land on steep slopes; For prioritisation, areas were identified that are located upslope of waterbodies that have “sediment” given as reason for not achieving good status in Water Framework Directive monitoring. This dataset was produced for NRW under contract by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider point sources of sediment input; it looks at intercepting the transport of sediment into waterbodies
