Ansawdd Dŵr: Cyfleoedd ar gyfer Lleihau Gwaddodi
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset identifies areas where management interventions could reduce sedimentation in coastal and transitional waters, as well as in rivers and lakes. The land management options considered include habitat restoration or habitat conversion in areas at high risk of erosion, riparian buffer strips, hedgerow planting, and the establishment of cover crops or grass on cultivated land. Opportunities located upstream of water bodies affected by sediment-related water quality issues are identified as priority areas for intervention.

The dataset was created by identifying opportunity areas for each land management intervention and combining them into a single layer representing opportunities to reduce sedimentation. Following the combination of individual opportunity layers, areas were prioritised according to identified levels of demand.
Individual opportunity layers were developed by:
identifying areas with a high risk of erosion where habitat restoration or land cover change could reduce soil erodibility;
identifying land that is biophysically suitable for tree planting, free from woodland planting constraints, located within 50 m of rivers, and situated within areas of high erosion risk;
identifying arable land at high erosion risk that does not already contain hedgerows along field boundaries; and
identifying arable land located on steep slopes where cover crops or grass establishment may help reduce sediment loss.
For prioritisation, areas upstream of water bodies where sediment has been identified as a reason for failing to achieve good ecological status under Water Framework Directive monitoring were designated as priority intervention areas.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider point sources of sediment input. It looks at intercepting the transport of sediment into waterbodies.
