WINS Water Quality: Constraints for Reducing Sedimentation
This dataset was created for the Welsh Information for Nature-based Solutions (WINS) project (previously known as SCCAN) to identify opportunities for land management interventions that enhance ecosystem service delivery across a range of key policy areas. An accompanying User Guide is available to support the use of these datasets, and a full list of source datasets and data limitations can be found in the project technical report.
This dataset shows the constraints affecting the implementation of land management interventions designed to reduce sediment inputs to the water environment. The constraints map combines constraints across all intervention types considered within the project. As a result, an area with one constraint affecting one intervention type and two constraints affecting another intervention type will be shown as having a total of three constraints. The map provides an indication of the relative complexity of implementing sediment reduction measures in different locations.

How the map has been created: To create the sediment management constraints map, the number of constraints affecting each land management intervention type was calculated and combined to produce a cumulative constraints score for each area. For example, an area with two constraints affecting riparian woodland planting and one constraint affecting hedgerow planting would be recorded as having three constraints in total. The intervention types considered were habitat restoration, riparian woodland planting, hedgerow planting, and the establishment of cover crops in autumn or grass on tillage land. This dataset was produced for NRW by Environment Systems Ltd.

Data gaps and limitations: National Phase 1 dataset is likely out of date in many places. The model does not consider point sources of sediment input. It looks at intercepting the transport of sediment into waterbodies.
