Aculeate Hymenoptera and Diptera assemblages at Dyfi National Nature Reserve – Ynyslas Dunes in 2019

  • English
  • wel
  • All

A survey of the aculeate bees, wasps and flies (Diptera) of Ynyslas Dunes was undertaken in 2019 to assess the current condition of the site for these important invertebrate groups. A total of 57 aculeate species was recorded, including 17 species new to the site, bringing the cumulative total of aculeate species known from Ynyslas Dunes to 119. However, only 40 of the 102 previously recorded aculeate species were refound during the survey.

Of the 38 aculeate species identified as part of the Ynyslas Dunes invertebrate assemblage, which currently comprises 141 dune-associated invertebrate species, 22 were recorded during the 2019 survey. In addition, four recognised dune-dependent species were added to the site list.

Notable records included Lasioglossum xanthopus, which was recorded at only its second Welsh locality, and Osmia bicolor, which was recorded for the first time in vice-county 46, both representing significant range extensions.

Lineage

Survey work was undertaken over five days between 5 May and 2 August 2019 during suitable warm and sunny weather conditions. On each survey date, at least two entomologists carried out field surveys across Ynyslas Dunes. For recording purposes, the site was divided into three survey compartments, corresponding to recording areas used in previous surveys to facilitate comparison with historical data. Specimens were collected through hand-searching, sweep-netting and the use of pan traps deployed at various locations within each compartment. The locations of significant species and nesting aggregations were recorded using GPS. Survey records were compiled to assess the status and distribution of aculeate bees, wasps and flies (Diptera) within the dune system.
