Aculeate Hymenoptera and Diptera assemblages at Morfa Dyffryn NNR and Morfa Harlech NNR, 2018 and 2019
A survey of the aculeate bees and wasps (Hymenoptera) and flies (Diptera) of Morfa Dyffryn and Morfa Harlech dunes was undertaken during 2018 and 2019 to assess the current condition of these sites for these important invertebrate groups.
At Morfa Dyffryn, 51 aculeate Hymenoptera species were recorded, including one European IUCN Vulnerable bee (Colletes fodiens), two Nationally Rare wasps, one Nationally Rare bee, three Nationally Scarce wasps and two Nationally Scarce bees. Thirty-two aculeate species associated with the Welsh sand dune invertebrate assemblage were recorded; however, seven previously recorded species were not refound. Three species were added to the site's dune assemblage list, including the Nationally Scarce spider wasp Arachnospila wesmaeli. A total of 110 Diptera species was recorded, including 32 recognised dune assemblage species. Nine dune-dependent fly species were added to the site list, and nine Nationally Scarce fly species were recorded, two of which were new to Morfa Dyffryn. The overall totals for dune-dependent aculeate Hymenoptera and Diptera now stand at 39 and 44 species respectively.
At Morfa Harlech, 57 aculeate Hymenoptera species were recorded, including one European IUCN Vulnerable bee (Colletes fodiens), one Nationally Rare wasp, one Nationally Rare bee, four Nationally Scarce wasps and three Nationally Scarce bees. Twenty-nine aculeate species associated with the Welsh sand dune invertebrate assemblage were recorded, although ten previously recorded species were not refound. One Nationally Scarce dune assemblage species was added to the site list. A total of 128 Diptera species was recorded, including two species previously recorded in 2017 and 28 species recognised as part of the sand dune invertebrate assemblage. Eight dune-dependent fly species were added to the site list, including six Nationally Scarce species and one Data Deficient species.
The overall totals for dune-dependent aculeate Hymenoptera and Diptera at Morfa Harlech now stand at 38 and 41 species respectively.

Survey work was undertaken at Morfa Dyffryn and Morfa Harlech between 9 May 2018 and 25 August 2019. Six survey days were completed at Morfa Dyffryn and five at Morfa Harlech, with visits timed to coincide with suitable warm and sunny weather conditions. On each survey day, at least two entomologists carried out field surveys.
Due to the large extent of both dune systems, it was not possible to survey the entirety of either site during a single visit. Surveys therefore focused on representative areas of habitat considered important for aculeate Hymenoptera and Diptera, including dune slacks, the margins of dune slacks, and elevated areas within slack systems. Species records were collected through targeted field searches and sampling of suitable habitats, with resulting data used to assess the status, distribution and condition of dune-associated invertebrate assemblages at both sites.
