The impact and significance of these activities depend on a number of factors including the intensity of the activity and the sensitivity of underlying habitats. Defining the specific locations in which these activities occur is integral to determining the potential for interactions with sensitive features. The data collection has been commissioned under the Wales non-licensable activities project and provides a robust dataset from a wide range of sources on the location of anchoring, mooring and launching sites in Wales from the high-water mark to 12nm offshore. The collated data was sent to a range of knowledgeable marine stakeholders for consultation to ensure that the polygons accurately represent the anchoring, mooring and launching areas and that no additional areas had been missed. A range of intensity metrics were used to allocate a value of intensity to each polygon for anchoring, mooring and launching. This includes extracting values from AIS data from the Royal Yachting Association, proximity to sailing clubs and centres and consultation with stakeholders.
