CuRVe Adaptability Habitat Recovery Period
The rate at which a habitat can recover back to a steady, stable state from a disturbance event is an inherent property of ecosystem resilience. Habitats that have an inherent ability to re-establish quickly following disturbance have a higher likelihood of persisting because they can re-establish rapidly and before the next disturbance event occurs. For example, wet woodlands can recover relatively quickly from flood events (providing this flooding stays within the range of historic limits), whilst ancient woodlands may take many hundreds of years to re-create if lost. The effect that recovery periods may have on ecosystem resilience is explored through this factor.

For this factor, all Phase 1 habitats were scored with regards to the expected time taken to reach their desirable species composition after a disturbance event cleared the area completely. This was considered the most objective way to compare the successional behaviour of different habitats, as it gives all habitats a similar starting point: Bare land that has previously contained the habitat in question. The values derived be assessing the Phase 1 data thusly were than averaged to the 1 km reporting squares. Full methodology details can be found in the project report (see additional information source).
