CuRVe Condition SACs
This dataset provides a spatial representation of the condition of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in Wales, developed as part of the CuRVe project. SACs are among the most extensively monitored conservation designations in Wales due to European reporting requirements, providing one of the few sources of directly measured habitat condition data derived from field survey and assessment. The dataset shows the percentage of SAC features assessed as being in favourable condition within each area. Areas outside SAC boundaries have a NoData value. The dataset was produced to contribute to the Condition attribute within the CuRVe assessment framework.

The dataset was derived from NRW's SAC condition assessment records. To maximise spatial coverage, condition assessments from all available reporting rounds recorded within NRW's SAC condition spreadsheet were consolidated, including first-round, second-round, third-round and most recent assessments. For each SAC feature, the most recent available assessment was used. Where no assessment was available in the latest reporting round, the most recent preceding assessment was selected.
As SACs are typically designated for multiple qualifying features that are not spatially recorded separately, feature-level assessments were summarised to site level. For each SAC, the percentage of assessed features recorded as being in favourable condition was calculated. Features without an available assessment were excluded from the calculation.
The resulting site-level condition values were joined to the spatial SAC boundary dataset. Values were then summarised within reporting squares by calculating an area-weighted average of the favourable-condition percentages of all SACs intersecting each reporting square. Areas that do not contain SACs were assigned a NoData value. Full details of the methodology are provided in the associated project report (see Additional Information).
