Scarce Yellow Sally stonefly Isogenus nubecula, River Dee at Bangor-on-Dee 2020

  • English

  • All

In 2018, a survey commissioned by Natural Resources Wales across the former known range of the Scarce Yellow Sally (Isogenus nubecula) confirmed the species at five sites on the River Dee, with particularly strong populations identified at Bangor-on-Dee and Pickhill Meadows. To assess its continued status, a follow-up survey was commissioned in 2020. The survey confirmed the continued presence of I. nubecula, with six nymphs recorded at Bangor-on-Dee on 24 March 2020. The survey contributes to ongoing monitoring of this rare stonefly and provides updated information on its distribution within the River Dee catchment.

Lineage

Field surveys were undertaken in 2020 to confirm the continued presence of the Scarce Yellow Sally (Isogenus nubecula) within the River Dee catchment. Survey planning was informed by current and forecast weather conditions, together with river-level data from the Manley Hall flow gauging station, as suitable water levels were required for effective kick-sampling. Aquatic invertebrate samples were collected from selected river locations using standard kick-sampling techniques and examined for the presence of I. nubecula nymphs. The resulting records were used to assess the current status and distribution of the species within the River Dee.
