Distribution of the spider Baryphyma gowerense on Cors Bodeilio, Cors Erddreiniog, Cors Geirch and Cors Goch 2019
In order to improve our knowledge of the ecology and distribution of the Vulnerable and Nationally Rare money spider Baryphyma gowerense, survey work was conducted on Cors Bodeilio, Cors Erddreiniog, Cors Goch and Cors Geirch National Nature Reserves (NNRs) between June and August 2019.

Survey work was conducted between 23rd June 2019 and 2nd August 2019. Two survey days were undertaken at Cors Bodeilio (23rd June and 13th July), Cors Erddreiniog (29th June and 20th July) and Cors Goch (12th July and 2nd August), with a single day spent at Cors Geirch (10th July) and an afternoon (28th June) at Newborough Warren, Afon Braint saltmarsh. Sampling locations were initially selected in habitats close to previous site records for Baryphyma gowerense (in the case of Cors Bodeilio, Cors Erddreiniog and Cors Geirch where the species had been recorded from previously). However, site selection was later refined once the habitat preference of B. gowerense was discovered during the survey. Thereafter, attention was focused towards blocks of NVC plant community M13b (Schoenus nigricans – Juncus subnodulosus mire; Erica tetralix variant), particularly those supporting robust, dense stands of Schoenus nigricans. To standardise sampling, a Stihl petrol G-vac was used to undertake three, 2-minute long, vacuum sampling sessions at each sample location. After each 2- minute vacuum, the contents of the G-vac’s sample bag were passed through a sieve onto a sorting tray and a representative sample of spiders collected. All “red & black” Linyphiidae were retained to maximise the chances of collecting B. gowerense.
