Wales Green Infrastructure Dataset 2021
The Wales Green Infrastructure (GI) Data Set shows every bit of Wales including wetlands and water that is not built upon or covered with a man-made surface. It shows areas that are designated for nature conservation (such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Local Nature Reserves and local wildlife sites) and areas with a legal right of public access. At a lower level of confidence, the data set can show: a typology of sites (e.g. open space, amenity space etc.); management quality (e.g. Green Flag Awards); and accessibility (e.g. public parks, country parks etc). It shows where green space exists near where people live, if it is likely to be natural, and whether people are likely to be able to get into it.

This data set has no link to the legal definition of Green Infrastructure or Green Infrastructure Assessments described in Planning Policy Wales Edition 10 onwards. It is built from data from publicly available sources, local authorities and some third parties, and it is based on mapping done by the Ordnance Survey. However: - It doesn’t show all the green space that people could use to get their daily dose of nature; - It hasn’t been checked by visiting the green spaces to see if they have been mapped correctly; and it doesn’t show that site is fit for purpose or adequate for community need. Data from local authorities shows places that are locally important for contact with nature, and spaces which are open to the public, like municipal parks. This means the data set can be used to get a more detailed picture of where people can actually go to experience nature near to where they live. The data set also uses the Ordnance Survey Open Greenspace Mapping product to supplement local authority data, bearing in mind that this only covers “urban” areas, and has some significant errors so it needs handling carefully. Warning: every data set is out of date the moment the “Save” command is used because land use changes all the time. Data sets are not reality – they are expert interpretations and they can only indicate what might be there on the ground. This data set should be used to select areas for further investigation and no decision should ever be taken without checking to see that the data set shows what actually exists.
