Set Ddata Seilwaith Gwyrdd Cymru 2021
The Wales Green Infrastructure (GI) Dataset shows all areas of Wales, including wetlands and water bodies, that are not built upon or covered by artificial surfaces. It identifies areas designated for nature conservation, such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) and Local Wildlife Sites, as well as areas with a legal right of public access.
At a lower level of confidence, the dataset can also indicate site typology (for example, open space or amenity space), management quality (such as Green Flag Award status), and accessibility (for example, public parks and country parks).
The dataset shows the distribution of green space in relation to where people live, whether that green space is likely to be semi-natural or natural in character, and the likelihood that it is accessible to the public.

This dataset has no direct relationship to the legal definition of Green Infrastructure or Green Infrastructure Assessments described in Planning Policy Wales (Edition 10 onwards). It has been compiled from publicly available data sources, local authority datasets and selected third-party data, and is based on mapping produced by the Ordnance Survey.
However:
It does not show all green spaces that people may use to access nature in their daily lives.
The green spaces shown have not been systematically verified through site visits to confirm their extent or classification.
It does not indicate whether a site is fit for purpose or adequate to meet community needs.
Data provided by local authorities identifies locations that are important for local access to nature, as well as publicly accessible spaces such as municipal parks. As a result, the dataset can be used to develop a more detailed understanding of where people may be able to access and experience nature close to where they live.
The dataset also incorporates information from the Ordnance Survey Open Greenspace product to supplement local authority data. However, users should note that this product only covers urban areas and may contain significant errors; it should therefore be used with caution.
Information Warning: All datasets become outdated as soon as they are created because land use and land cover are constantly changing. Datasets are not a direct representation of reality; rather, they are informed interpretations of available information and can only indicate what may exist on the ground. This dataset should be used to identify areas for further investigation, and no decisions should be made without first verifying that the information accurately reflects current conditions on site.
