Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Skomer Marine Conservation Zone plankton survey
Time series of consistent plankton samples taken using a Zooplankton net (200um mesh) from a single point on the North side of Skomer island. The net is hauled vertically from 40m and the methods used are designed to replicate the methods used by the Plymouth Marine Laboratory at the L4 plankton sampling station. Taxa are enumerated and recorded to various levels of taxonomic resolution depending on the group. Different taxonomists have been used throughout the time series but the data has been truncated to a standard species list. As of April 1st 2013 data is held and managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

2008 & 2009: A plankton samples were collected using a 63µm mesh plankton net trawled at less than 2 knots for 500m. The analysis was completed by Plymouth Marine Laboratory. 2010 -2012: A 200µm mesh WP2 net (UNESCO 1968) pulled on a vertical haul from 35- 40m depth at 0.2m / sec (3.5 minute haul). The sample is collected in the ‘cod-end’ bottle and this is preserved in 4% formalin. Two samples are taken at each sampling event. Both replicates are identified and enumerated by Andrea McEvoy, Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The window in the cod-end is of mesh 400µm. 2013 - onwards: A 200µm mesh WP2 net (UNESCO 1968 – see data entry) pulled on a vertical haul from 35- 40m depth at 0.2m / sec (3.5 minute haul). The sample is collected in the ‘cod-end’ bottle and this is preserved in 4% formalin. Two samples are taken at each sampling event. One replicate from each time point has been identified and enumerated by Dave Conway, Marine Biological Association. The window in the cod-end is of mesh 200µm.
