Habitat Map of Wales resurvey pilot – field survey
Phase 1 survey of 30 tetrads in Carmarthenshire and Neath Port Talbot. Digitised in the field using Qfield (android software a data capture application linked to QGIS).
Data collected as part of the Pilot for Habitat Map of Wales resurvey project.

Data was captured “in the field” using “Qfield” on a Samsung Galaxy active Tab3 tablet running Android. Polygons were digitised by using OS Master Map (OSMM) as a base layer into which Phase 1 survey codes were entered. Data was entered at a whole polygon level with some OSMM polygons split where habitats varied within a polygon. A target note and scattered vegetation layer were also produced, along with a hedgerow condition layer for 10 selected tetrads. Post data collection, the GIS files were copied to a windows computer and checked and edited as required in QGIS.
To assist planning the survey the following datasets were used:
• Urban and built land from OS Master Map
• Arable and temporary grasslands from WG annual returns
• Existing woodland (c.14% land cover) from the National Forest Inventory
• Recently surveyed sites from NRWs Phase 2 (NVC) databases (approximately 25% of uplands and up to 5% of lowlands)
Other datasets used to enhance and speed up field survey work included:
• An up-to-date spatial map of deep peat
• The original Phase 1 Habitat Map of Wales survey maps
• Recent aerial photography - Bing and Google Maps
• SSSI/SAC boundaries
