Surveying for the Bog Pseudoscorpion Microbisium brevifemoratum on the raised bog at Cors Fochno (Dyfi SSSI)

  • All

Cors Fochno was surveyed during October and November 2022 for the nationally rare Bog Pseudoscorpion (Microbisium brevifemoratum). The survey aimed to assess the species' presence and distribution using standardised sampling techniques across selected areas of the bog. A total of 62 minutes of vacuum sampling was undertaken at 17 sample points. Five specimens of M. brevifemoratum were recorded from two sample locations. One adult specimen represented a new site record, while four additional adults were recorded close to a location where the species had previously been found in 2021. The survey contributes to current knowledge of the distribution and status of this rare species at Cors Fochno.

Lineage

Survey work was undertaken at Cors Fochno during October and November 2022 using standardised timed vacuum sampling. A petrol-powered vacuum sampler (Stihl SH56C) was used to collect invertebrate samples from 17 sample points, providing a total sampling effort of 62 minutes. Collected material was sieved and examined using ×2 magnification to identify Microbisium brevifemoratum and other invertebrates. Additional sampling techniques included field sieving of Sphagnum moss and laboratory extraction of invertebrates from selected Sphagnum samples using Tullgren Funnel extraction. This method uses gradual drying and light exposure to drive invertebrates from the moss into a collecting vessel containing preserving alcohol. Survey records were used to determine the presence and distribution of M. brevifemoratum within the study area.
