Priority Ecological Networks
Rhwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth

Priority Ecological Networks (PENs) in the terrestrial environment are versions of the all-Wales habitat networks that show areas of connectivity between Protected Sites, and as such provide a framework to inform the location of action to build functional resilient ecological networks based on our most important places for biodiversity. Typical actions would be habitat improvement, restoration, or creation, located within the boundaries of a PEN, or situated at its margins to consolidate, extend, or link different PENs. These PENs supersede the GIS layers that were previously known as ‘Level 2 networks’, and are available for:

Native woodland; Semi-natural grassland; Heathland; Bog; Fen and Sand Dune.

All these priority networks are also represented as a ‘PEN Hotspot’ map, which is a simple count of all available networks within a given 1km square for an ‘at a glance’ view across Wales.

In addition, the ‘native woodland’ and ‘semi-natural grassland’ PENs have both received updates in the form of additional networks to accommodate our latest protected sites series and survey information and expand beyond what was originally available. Heathland, Bog and Fen have been merged from their originally separate upland and lowland versions into singular datasets and a previously unreleased ‘sand dune’ network is also now included. A Freshwater PEN is planned.

At sea, an ecologically coherent network of marine protected areas (MPAs) is being established which, when measures are in place to bring about good condition, will form the marine Resilient Ecological Network.

Connectivity within the MPA Network is inherently good, however some of the features (species and habitats for which the sites are designated) are known to be in unfavourable condition.

The Marine Priority Ecological Network (MPEN) map shows the full extent of the MPA network (light blue). Some areas have been highlighted (using hatching) which indicates sites where one or more feature(s) are known to be in unfavourable condition. In the highlighted areas, action is needed to deliver measures that restore features, reduce pressures to enable their recovery, or gather evidence needed to support effective management. Some condition assessments are still in development. In these cases lower confidence data from the 2018 indicative condition assessments have been to create this marine PEN layer and these are indicated via the peach colouring. When the new condition assessments are published or updated, these maps will be updated.

NRW continues to gather and assess information about the condition of habitats and species across the MPA network. Future iterations of the MPEN will incorporate new evidence and understanding as it becomes available.

Rhwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth yn yr amgylchedd daearol

Mae Rhwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth yn yr amgylchedd daearol yn fathau o rwydweithiau cynefinoedd Cymru gyfan sy’n dangos ardaloedd o gysylltedd rhwng safleoedd gwarchodedig, ac felly’n darparu fframwaith i lywio lleoliad gweithredu i adeiladu rhwydweithiau ecolegol gwydn a swyddogaethol yn seiliedig ar ein mannau pwysicaf ar gyfer bioamrywiaeth. Camau gweithredu nodweddiadol fyddai gwella, adfer neu greu cynefinoedd, wedi’u lleoli o fewn ffiniau Rhwydwaith ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth, neu wedi’u lleoli ar ei ymylon, i gydgrynhoi, ymestyn neu gysylltu gwahanol Rwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth. Mae’r Rhwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth hyn yn disodli haenau system gwybodaeth ddaearyddol a elwid gynt yn ‘rhwydweithiau Lefel 2’, ac maent ar gael ar gyfer y canlynol:

Coetiroedd brodorol, glaswelltiroedd lled-naturiol, rhostiroedd, corsydd, ffeniau a thwyni tywod

Mae’r holl rwydweithiau blaenoriaeth hyn hefyd yn cael eu cynrychioli fel map ‘Llecynnau Rhwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth’, sy’n gyfrif syml o’r holl rwydweithiau sydd ar gael o fewn 1km sgwâr penodol i gael ‘cipolwg’ ar draws Cymru.

Yn ogystal, mae Rhwydweithiau Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth y ‘coetiroedd brodorol’ a’r ‘glaswelltiroedd lled-naturiol’ wedi cael diweddariadau ar ffurf rhwydweithiau ychwanegol i ddarparu ar gyfer ein cyfres ddiweddaraf o safleoedd gwarchodedig a gwybodaeth arolwg ac maent yn ehangu y tu hwnt i’r hyn a oedd ar gael yn wreiddiol. Mae rhostiroedd, corsydd a ffeniau wedi’u huno o’u fersiynau ucheldirol ac iseldirol ar wahân yn wreiddiol yn setiau data unigol ac mae rhwydwaith ‘twyni tywod’ nas cyhoeddwyd o’r blaen hefyd wedi’i gynnwys bellach. Mae Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth dŵr croyw yn yr arfaeth.

Sylwer: Mae’r haenau mapiau unigol hyn yn ddisgrifiad wedi’i fodelu o gysylltedd cyfredol rhwng cynefinoedd ac felly dylid eu hystyried fel rhai disgrifiadol yn hytrach na rhai rhagnodol!

Yn ogystal â’r set hon o rwydweithiau blaenoriaeth, mae’n ddefnyddiol hefyd gallu gweld yr haenau hyn ochr yn ochr â setiau data agored eraill sydd ar gael i’w lawrlwytho o MapDataCymru gan ddefnyddio’r dolenni isod:

Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth yn yr amgylchedd morol

Ar y môr, mae rhwydwaith ecolegol cydlynol yn cael ei sefydlu o ardaloedd morol gwarchodedig a fydd, pan fydd mesurau ar waith i sicrhau cyflwr da, yn ffurfio Rhwydwaith Ecolegol Gwydn y môr.

Mae cysylltedd o fewn rhwydwaith yr Ardaloedd Morol Gwarchodedig yn gynhenid dda, fodd bynnag, mae’n hysbys bod rhai o'r nodweddion (rhywogaethau a chynefinoedd y dynodwyd y safleoedd ar eu cyfer) mewn cyflwr anffafriol. Yn ddiweddar, mae CNC wedi cynnal asesiadau cyflwr wedi'u diweddaru (Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Asesiadau cyflwr ar gyfer safleoedd morol Ewropeaidd Cymru (EMS) (2025) sydd bellach wedi'u hymgorffori yn y Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth forol hwn.

Mae map morol o rwydweithiau ecolegol o flaenoriaeth yn dangos maint llawn rhwydwaith yr ardaloedd morol gwarchodedig (glas golau). Mae rhai ardaloedd wedi'u hamlygu (gan ddefnyddio patrwm llinellau croes) i nodi safleoedd lle gwyddys bod un neu ragor o nodweddion mewn cyflwr anffafriol. Mae rhai asesiadau cyflwr yn dal wrthi’n cael eu datblygu. Yn yr achosion hyn, defnyddiwyd data â lefel hyder is o'r asesiadau cyflwr dangosol ar gyfer 2018 i greu'r haen hon o rwydwaith ecolegol o flaenoriaeth, ac fe'u nodir gan y lliw oren-binc. Pan gaiff yr asesiadau cyflwr newydd eu cyhoeddi neu eu diweddaru, caiff y mapiau hyn eu diweddaru.

Yn yr ardaloedd hyn sydd wedi eu croeslinellu, mae angen gweithredu i gyflwyno mesurau sy'n adfer nodweddion, yn lleihau pwysau i’w galluogi i wella, neu’n casglu’r dystiolaeth sydd ei hangen i gynorthwyo rheolaeth effeithiol.

Mae CNC yn parhau i gasglu ac asesu gwybodaeth am gyflwr cynefinoedd a rhywogaethau ar draws y Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth morol. Bydd fersiynau o'r Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth morol yn y dyfodol yn ymgorffori tystiolaeth a dealltwriaeth newydd wrth iddynt ddod ar gael.

Ochr yn ochr â'r Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth morol efallai y byddai'n ddefnyddiol edrych ar:

Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Asesiadau cyflwr nodweddion dangosol ar gyfer Safleoedd Morol Ewropeaidd: adroddiadau ar asesiadau cyflwr nodweddion dangosol, a gynhaliwyd yn 2018.

Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Asesiadau cyflwr ar gyfer safleoedd morol Ewropeaidd Cymru: adroddiadau ar asesiadau cyflwr nodweddion dangosol, a gynhaliwyd yn 2025 ar gyfer safleoedd Cymru yn unig.

Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Cynlluniau Gweithredu Thematig LIFE N2K: sy'n cynnwys gwybodaeth am bwysau a bygythiadau allweddol sy'n effeithio ar safleoedd a nodweddion o fewn y Rhwydwaith Ecolegol â Blaenoriaeth forol.

Mae setiau data agored defnyddiol eraill sydd ar gael i'w lawrlwytho o DataMapWales yn cynnwys:

Ardaloedd Morol Gwarchodedig yn Nyfroedd Cymru | DataMapWales (llyw.cymru): mae rhwydwaith yr Ardaloedd Morol Gwarchodedig yn cynnwys: Ardaloedd Cadwraeth Arbennig; Ardaloedd Gwarchodaeth Arbennig; safleoedd Ramsar; Safleoedd o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig a Pharth Cadwraeth Morol.
