Nutrient Review - Risk Maps
Surface water and groundwater risk maps created by combining current and future interpolated nitrate and phosphate surface water and concentrations and the nitrate and phosphate leachate concentrations. Each component was assessed using a scoring and weighting system, and the scores were combined to generate a national risk map for nitrate at a scale of 1 km2.

Broadly following the approach used for the 2016 review of groundwater NVZs, a GIS-based risk model was used to determine potential risks to surface and groundwater from phosphate/nitrate. The risk model combines national datasets of current and future phosphate/nitrate surface and groundwater concentrations and the leaching models. Each component is assessed using a scoring and weighting system, and the scores are combined to generate a national risk map for phosphate at a 1 km square grid scale. Areas with higher scores indicate potential risk to groundwater from phosphate. The risk model comprises three components derived using national monitoring and land use datasets. Each component was given a score and weightings were applied to these scores. The weighted scores were then combined to yield an overall risk score indicating the strength of evidence that the surface and groundwater is polluted by phosphate/nitrate from modelled land use diffuse sources. The scores and weighting applied are similar to those used for the 2016 review of groundwater NVZs. The GIS model was used to divide Wales into 1km grid squares. The weighted scores for each of the risk components were assigned to each grid square and summed to provide a total risk score to produce a national risk map for phosphate/nitrate.
