Emissions of radioactive substances from non-nuclear sites - OSPAR Report Data
Holders of an RSR (Radioactive Substances Regulation) open source permit including disposal to the environment are required to report annually to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) emissions of certain non-nuclear radioactive substances. This emissions data is collated as part of a UK dataset and is reported to the OSPAR Commission. (OSPAR is the mechanism by which 15 Governments and the EU cooperate to protect the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic.)

OSPAR’s non-nuclear reporting covers: • the oil & gas sector; • the medical sector; • universities and research centres; • the phosphate industry; • titanium dioxide pigment manufactures; • primary steel manufacture; • radiochemical production. Not all of these sectors are represented in Wales. The substances required to be reported are: • Carbon-14 • Chromium-51 • Hydrogen-3 • Iodine-125 • Iodine-131 • Lead-210 • Phosphorus-32 • Polonium-210 • Radium-226 • Radium-228 • Sulphur-35
