Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is the owner of the Welsh part of the data. The project aims to produce revised wintering population estimates for non-breeding gulls in the UK and its constituent countries, and also to assess numbers of each species in autumn. Information will be provided for all gull species, but with a focus on Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Mediterranean Gull Ichthyaetus melanocephalus, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull and Great Black-backed Gull as the six most numerous and widespread species that occur in the UK during the non-breeding seasons. Mediterranean Gulls have been added as an additional target species for WinGS, recognising their increased use of UK inland and coastal waters across breeding and non-breeding seasons. Only a redacted version of this data is available under the Open Government Licence and available for public use, see Limitations on Public Access and Use Constraints.
