The surveyors worked in parallel but kept apart and covered transects roughly 4m wide (2m on each side of the surveyor) to cover as much habitat as possible whilst ensuring there was no double counting of solaria. Areas of mown, grazed (or naturally shorter, more open vegetation) were used as the main “transect” routes. Areas of taller, more rank vegetation between these were also searched by walking “W walks” through them.
