West Anglesey fragile sponge and anthozoan communities dive survey, 2023
This resource contains data from surveys of fragile sponge and anthozoan (FSAN) communities off North and West Anglesey, collected during dive surveys in April-May 2023. Divers were tasked with re-surveying up to 17 sites previously surveyed as far back as 1996 to determine the continued presence of reported FSAN communities, namely of the biotope CR.HCR.XFa.ByErSp.DysAct (mixed turf of bryozoans and erect sponges with Dysidea fragilis and Actinothoe sphyrodeta on tide-swept wave exposed circalittoral rock.
This data was collected as FSAN communities are listed under Section 7 of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and this area around Anglesey has been proposed as an Area of Search (AoS) in the Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network Completion Programme by Welsh Government.
The data comprises of:
• 3GB of images (covering each of the 20 survey sites)
• 4GB of videos taken during dive surveys
• A Survey Photo Catalogue (Excel spreadsheet), with details of each photo and video (e.g. filename, subject, notable species, biotope)
• A Master metadata Excel spreadsheet

MNCR style, phase 2 diving surveys. MNCR forms were completed where the habitat was encountered and images and video recorded. Positional fixes of survey sites made by non-differential GPS taken from boat-based GPS system (horizontal accuracy <5m); coordinate reference system WGS84. Data entry was subjected to QA on-site and post-survey by the survey team, and by Matt Doggett/ Kate Northen during reporting.
