Welsh Acoustic Marine Mammal Survey (WAMMS)
The Welsh Acoustic Marine Mammal Survey (WAMMS) aim was to develop an effective and robust method for measuring underwater noise and the occurrence of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) in marine protected areas (MPAs) around the Welsh coastline. To test and demonstrate these monitoring methods, an 18-month pilot study was undertaken as part of the project in the North Anglesey Marine Special Area of Conservation (SAC). As well as illustrating how monitoring could be carried out elsewhere in Welsh marine waters, this pilot study provided baseline data on ambient noise and marine mammal detections at the site.
Three monitoring locations were selected within the North Anglesey Marine SAC: one at Holyhead deep, two off Point Lynas and one situated 1.7km off the coast and the other 5.2 km, at the boundary of the SAC.

At the three proposed monitoring locations, underwater noise data will be collected using the latest generation of Soundtraps (ST600HF, Ocean Instruments NZ) as well as click detector FPODs (Chelonia). Equipment will be deployed over an 18-month field season (May 2023 – November 2024) to better understand ambient noise levels and cetacean presence in the North Anglesey Marine SAC.
Further details on the methodology report can be seen in the 2023 Welsh Acoustic Marine Mammal Survey (WAMMS) Methodology Report.
