Mwdwl Eithin NVC Phase II Survey (part of Mynydd Hireathog)
Phase 2 National Vegetation Classification mapping of upland vegetation communities. The mapping has been carried out to NVC sub-community level. The total area surveyed is approximately 376ha in extent, the majority of which is dry heath, acid grassland and blanket bog habitat with associated communities.
The NVC survey report includes sufficient data to identify NVC communities and sub-communities with appropriately scaled mapping (usually 1:5000) except where flush complexes and rare bryophytes occur where 1:2,500 should be used.
The information is compatible GIS data for use with Arc GIS.

JBA Consulting are trusted contractors who undertook the work, which is consistent with previous NVC surveys on Mynydd Hiraethog. The aim was to survey and map all communities so far as possible and collect sufficient quadrat data and peat depth data to fully characterize the range of NVC vegetation types present.
The survey covered the following:
• Took peat depth measurements to ascertain where the areas of deep (>40 cm) and shallow peat occur. This helps with habitat definition e.g. separating degraded peatland communities from marshy grassland which might support similar species, and the data can be used in a future update of the Wales Peat Map.
• The contractor was encouraged to use specialist sub-contractors where necessary. Good bryophyte identification is critical for peatland community placement.
• The surveyor noted the location of rare, scarce, uncommon or notable species where encountered. An estimate of population size was made for each species at every location recorded. Existing bryophyte data can be viewed on NBN.
• The data, metadata, maps and background information has been presented in a final report.
Methods used:
A quadrat size of 2m x 2m (or equivalent area on restricted, e.g. narrow, vegetation stands) was used for all short herbaceous vegetation and dwarf shrub heath. Where the vegetation was taller and structurally more complex, a 4m x 4m quadrat size was more appropriate. It was also necessary to use a 10m x 10m quadrat for very species-poor vegetation or a 50m x 50m quadrat for woodland vegetation.
Quadrat locations were recorded using a hand-held GPS, with a resolution of at least 10m or better (i.e. eight figure NGR). In blanket bog, wet heath and marshy grassland communities, peat depth was recorded to the nearest cm at each quadrat and at other locations to help determine boundaries between (e.g.) wet heath, marshy grassland and blanket bog. Quadrat locations and peat depth sampling locations were clearly marked on survey maps and included as points on GIS maps.
