Protected Sites Monitoring Images
Digital images of protected sites in Wales captured by NCC, CCW and NRW. This includes digitised versions of images and associated metadata recorded by the SSSI Photomonitoring Project (NCC, CCW), digital images and metadata collected as of the SAC Monitoring Project (CCW, NRW), and digital images and metadata collected on SSSI and SAC for terrestrial monitoring by NRW.
Only non sensitive images may be used without specific consent from the custodian, see Limitation on Public Access and Use Constraints.

The SSSI photomonitoring archive comprises fixed point monitoring images from across Wales, recorded by NCC and CCW from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. Each SSSI has a baseline set of images, originally captured on 35 mm monochrome negatives (and occasionally colour slides), with paper contact sheets and site recording forms. These were all digitised in early 2026.
The SAC Monitoring images were captured as evidence supporting condition assessments as part of a rolling 6-year programme undertaken by CCW and NRW from c. 2000 to 2018.
The SAC and SSSI monitoring images have been captured as evidence supporting condition assessments and other field-based monitoring work undertaken at protected sites by NRW, from 2019 onwards.

This collation of images is classed as open data, with the exception of any sensitive images. The individual image metadata will need to be referred to for further information. Access to the sensitive images may therefore be restricted under relevant legislation. NRW may NOT publish or disseminate these sensitive images. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. However, there are no access restrictions on non sensitive images. NRW may release, publish or disseminate the non sensitive images freely.
