1987-1988 NCC Rostron - Skomer Marine Nature Reserve animal communities on stones monitoring
Baseline studies of seasonal changes in animal communities have been carried out over a 1 year period near to Garland Stone, North East Skomer. Visits to the site were made at 2 monthly intervals and in situ, photographic and sample collection methods were carried out. Two replicate 25cm x 25cm samples of substratum were carefully collected, returned to the lab and preserved in formaldehyde. All taxa were identified to the highest level possible.
This data may be related to the survey '1987 Rostron PMSA -Skomer MNR subtidal monitoring project (MR5 Identifier MRCCW10000000056)' although they cover different time periods and were digitised separately.

Samples were obtained from an area close to the Garland Stone on the North side of Skomer, where there was an extensive plain of small cobbles and pebbles, with shell gravel and muddy sand beneath. This site was chosen because the area had been previously used for similar work describing seasonal changes in the algal community and a marker buoy was already in position. The presence near Skomer of a suitably large area of apparently homogeneous habitat meant that sample material could be regularly removed from the site for detailed analysis without causing disturbance to the community overall.
Each survey event for this site represents the data from 2 pooled replicate samples, taken from this site at two monthly intervals over the period of 1 year, from March 1987 until January 1988. In addition, there is a further survey event for conspicuous species recorded during fieldwork.
