The Welsh Peatland Invertebrate Survey sampled invertebrates from peatlands throughout Wales during a 3 year period. The survey assessed the distribution of invertebrates species in peatland, and studied the effects of site management on the assemblage of invertebrates present. Around 106,000 records of invertebrates were found in peatland habitats in Wales, along with environmental information for each sampling station. All data relating to the WPIS is now held in NRWs Welsh Invertebrate database (WID). The survey was based on the whole of Wales and a report is available for each of the following vice counties, Anglesey, Brecon, Caernarfon, Carmarthen, Ceredigion, Denbigh (inc. Wem Moss, Shropshire), Glamorgan, Merioneth, Monmouth, Montgomery, Pembroke, Radnor. Data was collected between 1987-1989. New records have not been added to the WPIS itself as this dataset is now part of the Welsh Invertebrate Database. Most of the invertebrates were identified by project members and specimens were lodged with specialists for each group. Any material not taken by a specialist was lodged with the National Museum of Wales. Rare and difficult beetle species were checked by Martin Luff and John Owen; snails by Arthur Chater, David Holyoake and Michael Kerney; Spiders by Peter Merrett. Invertebrates targeted for identification were those for which there was an extensive body of ecological information available.
