Important Welsh Bat Roosts Database (BATSITES-WALES) 1946 - 2001
This dataset consists of information on important bat roosts from across Wales, mostly related to Greater and Lesser Horseshoe Bats and other rare species. It includes roost location and other site details, and results of repeat monitoring and surveillance. This database was originally created by Nature Conservancy Council as a UK-wide dataset. Welsh records were transferred to Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) in 1991. There has been no systematic updating since 1999. The purpose of this data capture was to record species distribution and details of bat roosts, to assist CCW's conservation work. In particular, to provide information when dealing with development proposals, to support in the monitoring and notification of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), and to aid with the monitoring and reporting on the status and trends of protected bat species.

Data was generated from visits to roosts by staff and volunteers and/or from enquiries received by NCC or CCW. This data is collated into BATSITES-UK which is held by former English Nature. Records held in BATSITES-WALES, will also be found (without monitoring data) in BATDATA-WALES and some will also appear in Welsh Horseshoe Bat Summer Roost Surveillance Database. This dataset's top copy is held and managed by NRW within their legacy CCW Recorder 6 application. There are 3716 records within this now static dataset.

Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data is as follows; 1) Location of bat roosts in private buildings or underground sites, shown at a more detailed scale than 1km square (4 figure grid reference). Disclosure would adverse affect the protection of the species due to risk of disturbance and alienation of the landowner; 2) Names and addresses of landowners, and names of recorders for which CCW does not have consent to release. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Team. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.
