Marine and estuarine fishes are important components of the coastal environment and their presence/absence is seen as indicative of the state of inshore seas. In view of the conservation significance of marine fishes as a major component of the marine and estuarine environment the conservation agencies of the UK have statutory obligations to examine current conservation requirement of the marine fish fauna and to establish and maintain a monitoring programme by which to review their status. Other literature sources were obtained through the National Lending Library inter-library loan scheme.

The publication date of the Marine and Estuarine Fishes of Wales Report has been used for the End Date of the metadata as no dates of data collection have been made clear within the report. The only data held is that within the report itself.
