This dataset has now been incorporated into, and superseded by, the new Phase 2 Lowland Peatland Survey of Wales. The survey work was undertaken during two distinct periods, with the first Phase 2 lowland peatland surveys conducted between 1977 and 1982 (this dataset). There was then a break before the second tranche of surveys, which have been carried out from 2004 onwards.


These more recent surveys were conducted on sites already covered by the 1977-1982 surveys, as well as on newly identified sites.


FenBASE is an ecological database of fen habitats maintained by the Wetland Research Group, University of Sheffield. It contains pre-NVC vegetation survey data comprising approximately 4,100 quadrats, originally collected on paper and subsequently entered into the FenBASE database. The dataset includes site summaries (known as the Wales Wetland Survey) and a collection of slides.


FenBASE was created to provide a comprehensive database of information relating to fens in England. FenBASE data have been used to evaluate the potential effects of nutrient enrichment on basin fens at a regional level, provide an overview of mitigation options applicable to sites at risk from nutrient enrichment, and identify additional data requirements to support further assessment and evaluation.
