Welsh Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) Summer Roost Surveillance Database (1987-2013)
The monitoring of Lesser Horseshoe Bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) is required under the EC Habitats Directive and contributes towards the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for the species. This dataset comprises of two summer surveillance collations for Welsh Lesser Horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros). The two collations date from 1987 to 2006 and from 2006 to 2011. They contain the results of annual summer surveillance of selected Lesser Horseshoe bat maternity and nursery roost sites. It includes a range of associated environmental data, such as temperature and weather conditions. The purpose of this data capture was to provide standardised information for planning and development control purposes. Data is used to support notification and subsequent monitoring of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). This dataset is now classed as static as no data is currently added to these records. Instead these records are now sent directly to the Bat Conservation Trust as part of their National Bat Monitoring Programme.

Wales has an internationally important population of Lesser Horseshoe Bats with over 60 sites included throughout Wales. The surveillance enables trends in the populations to be modelled. The surveillance surveys were carried out by over 100 volunteers to UK standard methodology, as used by National Bat Monitoring Programme. Bats were counted at emergence using bat detectors. Count surveys were carried out in June within two ten day periods. There is a high level of confidence in records collected using the standard methodology. The data form includes question on whether each count has been validated. Some recorders do not count within the specified period and their counts are given in the report, but not included in the ranked tables, nor in the data analysis. Roosts in this dataset also appear in BATSITES-WALES and BATDATA-WALES but the data collected forms differing datasets. This dataset covers the whole of Wales and NRW hold and manage the top copy of the data which make up 3538 records (1987-2006 has 1910 records and 2006-2011 has 1628 records).
- Additional Information
-
There are a number of factors affecting the number of bats using a roost site and caution is required in interpreting trends for individual sites.

Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted as it contains data exempt from general release under EIR. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. The sensitive data is as follows; 1) Location of bat roosts in private buildings or underground sites, shown at a more detailed scale than 1km square (4 figure grid reference). Disclosure would adversely affect the protection of the species due to risk of disturbance and alienation of the landowner. 2) Names and addresses of landowners, and names of recorders for which NRW does not have consent to release.
