Seabird Colony Surveillance along Castlemartin Coastline, South Pembrokeshire
This dataset contains the results from the surveillance of breeding seabird species including: auks (guillemot, razorbill, puffin), large Larus gulls (herring, lesser black-back, great black-back), kittiwake, shag and fulmar and the surveillance of productivity of kittiwakes. The overall purposes of the data capture was to contribute to the JNCC-managed Seabird Monitoring Programme. Local purposes for the data capture were to - Assess SSSI feature condition (seabird assemblage) in two adjacent Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI); - Maintain up-to-date records of regionally high concentrations of seabirds relevent to management of recreation (sea cliff-climbing and coasteering) - Service update/data requirements for local regional marine pollution contingency plans.

Counts of whole colonies for all species, and recorded/mapped study plots (for auks and kittiwake) from the cliff-top and by boat (standard methodology utilised, following JNCC Seabird Monitoring manual), within colony/sub colony zones in standard JNCC Seabird 2000 Census areas and sites within the UK Seabird colony register. Approximately 20 kms of Castlemartin limestone coast, including Stackpole SSSI and Castlemartin Cliffs and Dunes SSSI (both coastal areas are within a chough SPA) with occasional surveys of other south Pembs coastal areas between Tenby and Freshwater West (all within other coastal SSSI). Linked also to periodic national seabird surveys, first one in 1969; next 1985/87; most recent Seabird 2000 (1999-2001).
