Monitoring of Horseshoe Bats with Automatic Bat Counters

  • English
  • wel
  • All

Automated bat counters have been deployed at various important roost sites for Greater and Lesser Horseshoe Bats (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum and Rhinolophus hipposideros). These collect roost entrance and exit numbers for the bats as well as some limited environmental data. The purpose of this data capture was to obtain reliable population data, in order to relate the changes in bat population and behaviour to changes in the climate and environment in an attempt to understand the factors that limit the geographical ranges of the 2 species. In Wales, Greater Horseshoe Bats breed at the northern limit of their distribution and Lesser Horseshoe Bats breed up to the north coast of Wales where they are fairly common but they are not found at this latitude in England or the mainland of Europe. The sample roosts are within Special Areas of Conservation. The data gives valuable information on the seasonal activity of these bats which can be directly related to management within and around these key roost sites.

Lineage

The flight of all bats in and out of a roost is recorded continuously on a computer (together with some environmental data in the case of some loggers). The bats are detected by infrared beam arrays, mounted in the roost entrance, together with laptops installed nearby. A bat flying through a roost entrance is detected when a beam is interrupted. There are two parallel arrays so direction can be recorder along with time/date. Raw data is manually processed using a script every few months to produce counts and graphs.
