Bat Roosts Database - North West Wales (GWYBATS)

This GWYBATS is a Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) regional bat roost site information and lesser horseshoe bat monitoring data for Caernarvonshire, Anglesey and Merionethshire. The original records were derived from BATSITES-WALES and the original Bat Roosts Database - Caernarvonshire and Anglesey (GWYBATS), which were subsequently validated. New records received by the CCW Bangor (Llys y Bont) regional office have since been added. The purpose of this data capture was to record species distribution and details of bat roosts, to assist CCW's conservation work. In particular, to provide information when dealing with development proposals, to support the monitoring and notification of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), and to aid with the monitoring and reporting on the status and trends of protected bat species.

Data was generated from visits to roosts by staff and volunteers and/or from enquiries received by NCC or CCW. The dataset called GWYBATS was compiled using data from BATDATA-WALES and BATSITES-WALES for the Gwynedd Unitary Authority region. Now the top copy of this data is held and managed by Cofnod who publish it on the NBN Gateway on behalf of NRW, who own the dataset.

The sensitive data is as follows; a) Location of bat roosts in private buildings or underground sites, at a more detailed scale than 1km sq (4 figure grid reference). Disclosure would adverse affect the protection of the species due to risk of disturbance and alienation of the landowner. b) Names and addresses of landowners, and names of recorders for which NRW does not have consent to release. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.
