Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: European Dry Heath, Northern Atlantic Wet Heath and Blanket Bog at Eryri candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC) (2005)
Monitoring to assess the condition of three European Annex 1 habitats; Dry Heath, Wet Heath and Blanket Bog, at Eryri. The purpose of this data capture was to assess the condition of features on the Eryri cSAC designated site based on site-specific performance indicators, and to record aspects of their management, both as an aid to management decisions and for reporting at a variety of scales. The areas of Eryri targeted for survey lie in four separate compartments, and their approximate locations are around Aber Falls, Llyn Cowlyd, Tryfan and an area to the south and west of Bethesda.

Work comprised of two phases. Phase 1, the survey phase: Approximately one quarter of the Eryri cSAC was surveyed to assess the extent and condition of the three habitats. Phase 2, the monitoring phase: Fifteen Sample Plots were subsequently chosen for monitoring, most but not all of these plots lie within the Phase 1 survey area. Seven Dry Heaths and four of each of Blanket Bog and Wet Heath habitats were sampled. Survey phase: Areas of habitat were mapped in the field and classified according to habitat type and condition; condition was based upon a set of Performance Indicators (PIs). The survey made use of the Countryside Council for Wales's National Vegetation Classification (NVC) maps along with recent aerial photography. Monitoring phase: Monitoring phase: 14 Monitoring Plots were monitored with Sample Points situated within a grid format. Botanical data and Geographical Position System (GPS) locations were captured using a high accuracy GPS. Revised Performance Indicators were used. Contributes to the 'Common Standards Monitoring (CSM)' dataset.
