Surveys were undertaken to determine the presence of larvae and efts using a combination of visual observation, bottle trapping, torch surveys, and netting. Environmental conditions within each pond, together with the presence of fish and waterfowl species, were also recorded. Data quality and limitations Historical records varied considerably in both format and level of detail, and these inconsistencies are reflected in the compiled dataset. Some surveys presented results at site level, making it impossible to distinguish records for individual ponds. In addition, the absence of a consistent pond numbering system at some sites made it difficult to relate records to specific ponds, although most surveys used the newer alphanumeric pond reference system. Wherever possible, records were verified and clarified through consultation with CCW and partner organisations.
