West Pembrokeshire tidally exposed seabed and shores (2003)
As part of the UK's commitment to the 1992 UNEP Convention on Biological Diversity there have been a number of coordinated initiatives to identify those habitats which may be under threat in the UK, and to establish plans to reduce those threats and thereby maintain biodiversity. The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) is now one of the main focuses of that work. It provides detailed proposals for a number of species, species groups and habitats requiring urgent conservation action. Tidal Rapids is one of those habitats. Tidal Rapids are a UK Biodiversity Action Plan feature and rocky Reefs are listed as an Annex I feature under the Habitats Directive (1992). These features are of conservation importance and the data collected during this survey is used to help define conservation objectives and inform decisions regarding protection and management. Marine biological surveys of seabed habitats and communities in four areas exposed to strong tidal currents around southwest and northwest Wales, were made in summer 2002 and summer 2003. Survey methods were based on the standard Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) techniques using in-situ identification of conspicuous species and description of habitat and community characteristics. The survey sites were chosen to represent the range of tide-swept rocky habitats present in each area; particularly concentrating on sites for which where there was no (or very limited) previous survey data. Recent multi-beam survey images aided selection of the sites in the Daugleddau Estuary, Milford Haven and West Pembrokeshire coast. Subtidal and intertidal components of the fieldwork were carried out separately. Further details of these standard methodologies are given in MNCR Rational and Methods. Each site survey was recorded immediately on standard MNCR recording forms. Previous surveys have been undertaken this areas, by various parties and include some detail of the 'Tidal Rapids' and reef systems. These include surveys carried out by CCW, JNCC, some Seasearch surveys and other surveys. However, the previously available data are limited and do not fully describe the range of rocky tide-swept features present in each area.
