Bat Roosts Database - Montgomeryshire
This dataset contains records for all species of bats recorded in roosts within Montgomeryshire. The purpose of this data capture was to record species distribution and details of bat roosts in order to assist Natural Resources Wales' (NRWs) conservation work. In particular, to provide information when dealing with development proposals, to support the monitoring and notification of SSSIs, and to aid with the monitoring and reporting on the status and trends of protected bat species. This dataset contains records for all species of bats recorded in roosts within Montgomeryshire. The data also indicates the abundance of each species at each location. Data was extracted from files as part of an exercise carried out by the Local Record Centre on behalf of former Countryside Council for Wales. A top copy of this data is held by the Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park Biodiversity Information Service (BIS) Local Record Centre. An older copy of the data is held on NRW's copy of Recorder 6 under CCW Montgomeryshire General Bat Files WA0001500000001O however this has not been updated since 2003.

This datasets has been obtained from former Countryside Council for Wales' Regional site files and visits to bat roosts by Countryside Council for Wales' staff and volunteers. The data has been collated in paper format and transferred to Recorder 6 under agreement with the Local Record Centres, Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park Biodiversity Information Service (BIS) . An electronic copy was then provided back to Natural Resources Wales' to be held at the local office (Newtown). The dataset has been validated, although one or two outliers do still exist in the dataset. A top copy of the data is held by Powys and Brecon Beacons National Park Biodiversity Information Service (BIS) and is also available through the NBN Gateway.

Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data is as follows a) Location of bat roosts in private buildings or underground sites, at a more detailed scale than 1km square (4-figure grid reference). Disclosure would adverse affect the protection of the species due to risk of disturbance and alienation of the landowner. b) Names and addresses of landowners, and names of recorders for which NRW does not have consent to release. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.
