Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) Public Rights of Way (PROW) Condition Survey
This is a spatial dataset containing spatial information related to the Public Rights of Way (PROW) obtained from the PROW condition survey. The core survey assessed the condition of 3,283 km of rights of way within 225 randomly selected survey squares. A sufficient number of survey squares were selected to ensure a geographically representative spread and were randomly selected within highway and national park authority areas. The length of paths surveyed was calculated to provide statistically reliable and representative information about path condition within each authority area. The purpose of this data capture was to strategically assess the physical condition of public rights of way in Wales to inform Countryside Council for Wales (CCW's now NRW's) work, including policy advice and guidance to the Welsh Assembly Government and other stakeholders. This can be used for the basis for cost estimates for improving the PROW network in Wales. Condition survey data was deemed very good [a robust sampling methodology and survey and data quality control procedures were employed]. These are detailed in an associated research report.

PROW base date was taken from CCW's (now NRW) existing PROW dataset [which was itself digitised from Local Authorities [LAs] definitive maps during the mid 1990s]. This data was [partially] supplemented or updated using local authorities own GIS definitive PROW data where this was available. The research report details which authorities provided updated information. Condition survey data was collected by on the ground survey over summer months of 2002 and is only available within the report; PROW data largely based on 1990s data supplemented by updated information from some [but not all LAs] at the time of the survey. INFORMATION WARNING: This dataset is out of date and should not be used for legal challenges.
