MINESCAN
This is a spatial dataset containing point data of mine sites (metaliferous non-metaliferous) in Wales. Data taken from minescan spreadsheet data. The purpose of this data capture was to form a spatial framework for MINESCAN sites.
In 1996 the Minescan project ran for four years. This was commissioned by the former Countryside Council for Wales and John S. Mason undertook the project as a consultant to the National Museum and Galleries of Wales (NMGW).
The project involved field assessments of the conservation value of over 1000 old mines and other mineralogical sites throughout Wales, and the data obtained permitted an objective ranking of the sites relative to one another. As a primary result, a comprehensive network of SSSI and RIGS sites was identified, representing all aspects of mineralisation and metallogenesis in Wales. These sites have a real chance of survival as future scientific resources.

MINESCAN Survey by National Museum of Wales for joint CCW/NMGW project. The MINESCAN project ran in the late 1990s and looked at all mine sites across Wales with the aim of evaluating their geoconservation importance. This included a desk study capturing the location of all mine sites which were recorded in a spreadsheet and at some stage a GIS point layer was created. The sites deemed of conservation importance were listed as SSSI or RIGS value and were progressed in the next part of the project.
Information warning: We are unable to audit the complete dataset to correct any errors. The sites that are showing as located in England and off the Welsh coast are incorrect and should be discounted. Errors in the grid references may have happened at numerous stages and there may not have been accurate grid references for some sites referred to in the literature.
