Seasearch Marine Surveys in Wales 1995 onwards (3rd Party Data)
Seasearch is a national project for volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they're seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of Britain and Ireland. This dataset contains the results of a number of Seasearch surveys carried out around the coast of Wales from 1995. A snapshot of the SeaSearch data is merged with the NRW Marine Recorder snapshot. The main aim is to map out the various types of sea bed found in the near-shore zone. The data collected is also used to fill gaps in our knowledge about what lives where, what affect human activities are having on marine life and to help advise government and policy makers on actions needed to protect the marine wildlife and habitats e.g. by identifying sites where better protection may be needed.

Seasearch divers use one of three tiers of recording. 1) The Seasearch Observation form is a straightforward form which is filled in with information about the main habitat and seabed cover types found on a dive and the main species of marine life encountered i.e. a single sample containing habitat and species data from each site. 2) The Seasearch Survey form is a more detailed account of a survey and includes species list using the SACFOR abundance scale, and habitat descriptions for each habitat found i.e. multiple habitat and species lists. 3) There are also a number of special projects with their own methodology e.g. Sea Fan Survey, Crawfish Survey and Skate and Ray Eggcase Survey. The recording forms from each of the above are handed in to the dive organiser or sent directly to Seasearch to be validated and entered into Marine Recorder. NRW holds a snapshot of all the surveys relating to Welsh coastal waters.
