Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Marine Benthic Species and Habitat Collation Held in Marine Recorder
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) currently holds and collates current and former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) marine benthic species, biotope, habitat, and particle size analyses data in Marine Recorder. A snapshot of the data may be made available through the use of the Marine Wizard and is also available on the NBN Gateway. NRW data are merged with snapshots of datasets from across Wales supplied from other data providers (e.g. JNCC, NE, DASSH and Seasearch) using the suite of tools provided with the program and made available for internal use. The purpose of marine data capture through the use of Marine Recorder is to provide access to all marine benthic species and habitats data at NRW through one program.
From 2024, the data will be migrated to the new Marine Recorder Online tool. A subset of data that is suitable for public use is published through the NBN Atlas.

All data held in marine recorder forms part of other surveys and work commissioned at NRW. Data are provided through a variety of in-house and contracted surveys run by CCW. Methodologies for each survey are held within the description of the survey in Marine Recorder and each has its own metadata entry. Some additional data has been entered through data collation exercises and consists of mainly historical data and some third party data. All data is entered by either NRW staff members or NRW contractors. An additional tool, Marine Recorder Wizard, allows staff to interrogate datasets held within Marine Recorder. There is high confidence in these datasets. All NRW data is validated by NRW staff members and an indication of the quality of the survey is recorded within the dataset. The majority of surveys are carried out by experienced marine biologists. Volunteer surveys are checked by NRW staff. Historical data may have lower precision and accuracy and may not be verified.

This data is comprised of a mixture of third party owned records and NRW records. NRW policies permits access to and release of this data under the same terms as its own data. Part of this dataset is sensitive and restricted. The sensitive data is as follows Ostrea edulis, Palinurus elephas, Hippocampus guttulatus, Hippocampus hippocampus and the habitat IMX.Ost. Sensitive data must be kept confidential; general release is not permitted due to risk of harm to the environment or third parties. Sensitive data may only be released under an appropriate NRW Licence. Requests should be referred to NRW's Access to Information Officer. Data may be released freely if the sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale.

© CNC/NRW and various third party recorders 2011 NRW owns the copyright of the collation, but the ownership of the records themselves rests with the originator. There are no use restrictions on this data. Recipients may re-use, reproduce, disseminate this data free of charge in any format or medium, provided they do so accurately, acknowledging both the source and the copyright of NRW/third party recorders and do not use it in a misleading context. It is the recipient's responsibility to ensure the data is fit for the intended purpose, that dissemination or publishing does not result in duplication and that it is fairly interpreted. Advice on interpretation should be sought where required. To avoid re-using old data, users should periodically obtain the latest version from the original source. Recipients may only re-use sensitive data in strict confidence under the terms of an appropriate NRW Licence. No publication or dissemination is permitted, except if sensitive records are removed in advance, or shown only at a coarser scale. NB. NRW data are merged with snapshots of datasets from across Wales supplied from other data providers (e.g. JNCC, NE, DASSH and Seasearch) for access to these datasets use restrictions may differ and therefore dataset requestors are advised to contact the owner / originator of the specific dataset or data required.
