Bangor University Acoustic Multibeam Echosounder Survey of the North Llyn Modiolus Bed 2008 (3rd Party Data)
This is a multibeam echosounder (MBES) dataset covering the extent of the original horse mussel (Modiolus modiolus) bed off the north coast of the Llyn Peninsular, just west of Porth Dinllaen. The area surveyed is approximately 13 km long and 4 km wide. Additional boat time between British Geological Survey (BGS) surveys was utilised to provide coverage of the North Llyn Modiolus bed. The dataset has been subsequently used by former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), now Natural Resources Wales (NRW) for modiolus monitoring work; and, by Bangor University for teaching and Master of Science (MSc) project work. The confidence in this dataset is high. The data has been tidally corrected although a couple of small gaps exist. It is not clear whether the data meets International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) order 1 standards.

The area surveyed extends from Porth Dinllaen in a south-west direction to just west of Porth Ysgaden on the north side of the Llyn Peninsular, north west Wales. The survey data was collected aboard the Bangor University Research Vessel (RV) Prince Madog using the British Geological Survey (BGS) Kongsburg EM 3002 multibeam system. The data was then processed at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and tidally corrected using the OLEX bathymetric system. A tide gauge was installed close by (at Porth Ysgaden) to provide the data for tidal correction, which was corrected to the Holyhead base station and then to Ordnance Datum Newlyn.

Analysis of the 2008 multibeam data and modiolus extent is written up in "Gibbs P. E. (2008) Acoustic monitoring of sensitive protected habitats. MSc Applied Marine Geoscience School of Ocean Sciences Bangor University." Data can be compared to the multibeam survey done in 2005 part of which covers the same area as portions of the HABMAP (habitat mapping) project. See page 26 of the MSc report for more details about how the data was tidally corrected.
