A species richness survey of LR.H hydroid-dominated rockpools was undertaken in 2004 at Whiteford Point within the Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The survey sought to evaluate the potentially ephemeral nature of hydroid rockpools through detailed assessment of their associated flora and fauna. Hydroid rockpools are characterised by Obelia longissima, Kirchenpaueria pinnata, ephemeral green algae and a range of associated intertidal species including Littorina littorea, Mytilus edulis, barnacles and polychaetes. The survey documented species assemblages and diversity within individual pools, providing a baseline dataset for future monitoring of ecological condition and change within this SAC feature.

Lineage

Hydroid rockpools at Whiteford Point were first identified during CCW Phase 1 biotope surveys undertaken in 2000. To support ongoing SAC monitoring, IECS was commissioned by CCW to undertake detailed species richness monitoring of individual hydroid-dominated rockpools during 2004.

Individual rockpools were photographed and recorded using differential GPS, and the boundaries of distinct pools were mapped where possible. Pool characteristics, including dimensions, location and distinguishing features, were documented. Species inventories were compiled for each pool and additional under-boulder searches were undertaken by turning a minimum of ten rocks within each survey area to record cryptic species not immediately visible. A record was also kept of the time taken to compile each species list.

Survey teams consisted of experienced intertidal surveyors, providing a high degree of confidence in taxonomic identification. The study highlighted the difficulties of surveying hydroid-dominated rockpools on a dynamic and variable intertidal substratum but provided an important baseline dataset and reference point for future assessments of ecological condition. GPS positional accuracy was estimated at approximately ±5 metres. Work was undertaken under contract to CALM. In 2012, species records held within Marine Recorder were restructured to conform to standardised recording formats.
