Intertidal Monitoring of Hydroid-dominated Rockpools in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) 2004
Hydroid rockpools (LR.H) are, by definition, species poor in comparison to other rockpool biotopes within the UK. LR.H rockpools are shallow mixed substrata pools characterised by the hydroids Obelia longissima and Kirchenpaueria pinnata, ephemeral seaweeds such as Ulva sp. and Enteromorpha spp. and the common periwinkle Littorina littorea. The casts of the lugworm Arenicola marina and the sand mason worm Lanice conchilega can be found in sandier pools. Hydroid rockpools are also associated with mussel beds (SLR.MytX), with Mytilus edulis present in the pools. Barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides and Elminius modestus) and the keel worm Pomatoceros sp. may also be attached to the harder substrata. On the south side of the Burry Inlet, hydroid rockpools have been identified at Whiteford Point during Phase 1 biotope surveys carried out by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) in 2000. The rockpools are located at the tip of Whiteford Point, within the vicinity of a cast iron Victorian lighthouse, currently listed as an ancient monument. The purpose of this data capture was to map and assess the current extent and distribution of Hydroid rockpools within the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and evaluate the possible ephemeral nature of Hydroid rockpools by assessing the species richness of the rockpools at Whiteford Point.

The study of hydroid-dominated rockpools on a low-lying area of intertidal proved very difficult due to the variable nature of the substratum and of the areas of standing water. This report provides a reference against which the future condition of the pools can be monitored and also identifies some of the more effective means of recording the habitat and associated species. Surveys were carried out by a team of 5 surveyors working three hours either side of low water. Extent and distribution: A grid format of sample points was surveyed along lines of eastings and northings over the area of rockpools. Sample points were taken every 100m along transects. At each sample point a GPS coordinate and photograph was taken. Physical characteristics (percent sand cover, percent cover of hard substratum and percent cover of standing water) and key species of flora and fauna were recorded within the 4m2 survey area. Species diversity: A GPS point and photograph were taken for each rockpool and the boundaries of distinct rockpools were mapped using a differential GPS. Characteristics of the pool (dimension, location, distinguishing features) were noted and species present recorded. Additional underboulder species were checked for by turning over at least ten rocks. A note was made of time spent compiling the species list.Teams consisted of 2 experienced intertidal surveyors each, providing reasonable confidence in taxonomic identification. GPS position is expected to be +/- 5 m. In 2012 the species data entered into Marine Recorder was re-structured to meet standard formats. Work carried out under contract to CALM. Hydroid rockpools have been identified at Whiteford Point during Phase 1 biotope surveys carried out by CCW in 2000. As part of the ongoing monitoring program for CCW, IECS were commissioned to carry out further monitoring at this key site.
