Intertidal Monitoring of Ophelia bicornis in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2004
The purpose of this data capture was to determine whether Ophelia bicornis found at two sites within the lower Loughor estuary during Phase 1 surveys carried out by Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) were still present. The polychaete Ophelia bicornis is known from only a few locations in the UK and is therefore of national importance. It is particularly vulnerable to changes in the granulometric composition of the sediment, pollution and trampling. The purpose of this data capture to determine whether O. bicornis found at two sites within the lower Loughor estuary during Phase 1 surveys carried out by CCW were still present.

Ophelia bicornis found at two sites within the lower Loughor estuary during CCW intertidal Phase 1 surveys. Quadrat sampling was carried out in areas of suitable sediment at 25 m intervals along four 75 m transects spaced 25 m apart. At each sample site a GPS position and photograph were taken and sediment was removed (to a depth of 20cm) from a 50 x 50 cm area and passed through a 0.5 mm sieve. Any animals retained in the sieve were identified and returned to the sediment. Any Ophelia bicornis found were identified and an example preserved and returned to the laboratory for formal identification. All other samples were returned to the sediment. Confidence in this dataset is high. Professional taxonomic experts were used to confirm the identity of polychaetes collected.
