SAC Monitoring: Shad Monitoring Data for Rivers Wye, Usk and Tywi (2006)
The purpose of this data capture was to monitoring of the Rivers Wye, Usk and Tywi for the presence of Shad. These Rivers are designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) partly because they support internationally important populations of twait shad. Allis Shad is also a feature of the sites and a secondary reason for selection as a SAC. Records of other species of freshwater and estuarine fish are also recorded as part of this dataset. This provides a collation of existing knowledge, habitat and shad data, and provides evidence to design and implement a suitable juvenile monitoring programme for their condition assessment. There were 5 survey sites along the River Usk, 5 sites along the River Wye and 5 sites along the River Tywi. Further data is available in paper format in the associated report with historical records of eggs surveys extending back to 1980. This historical data is collated from the Environment Agency.

The collation of data comes from a variety of sources including excel spreadsheets for data collected in 2006, Recorder surveys uploaded in 2007, and spatially mapped sample locations. Juvenile shad seine netting was undertaken in September and October 2005 and July 2006 in accordance with protocols described by Hillman et al (2003). Each sample station was netted multiple times and counts recorded for each. All fish were measured and a sub sample identified to species, using gill raker counts. The confidence in this dataset is high as it was undertaken by experienced staff.
